Making the Dean’s List at Western Colorado University

A student with a passion for business, politics, and outdoor activities, Michael “Mike” Kunka attended Midway High School in Waco, Texas. In May 2020, Michael Kunka enrolled at Western Colorado University and made the Academic Dean’s List in his first year.

Western Colorado University’s Dean’s List recognizes students who achieved a grade-point average of 3.70 while undertaking a full course load (12 or more credits in a 16-week semester or six-plus credits in the summer session). Only grades earned through the institution are used to calculate GPA.

The university follows a simple process for calculating GPA. For each course a student takes, he or she earns a letter grade at the end. The highest grade is A and the lowest is F. Each letter grade is assigned numerical grade points. Letter grade A has a numerical grade point of 4.000, and letter grade F has a numerical grade point of 0.000.

Each course is worth three credits--so if a student earns a grade point of 3.000 in one course, he or she has earned 9 credits in that course (3 multiplied by 3). If he or she earned a grade point of 2.000 in another course, he or she gets a credit of 6 (2 multiplied by 3). Overall, if a student takes four courses, each with three credits, his or her GPA will be the total of his or her credits per course divided by 12.
